Generale Nino Pasti

NINO PASTI

Born in Bologna in 1909, he was assigned to a number of important positions as an Air Force general, including Assistant Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Chairman of the High Council of the Armed Forces and Assistant Supreme Commander for NATO Nuclear Affairs in Europe.

Elected to the Italian Senate in 1976 as a left-wing independent, he clashed with the leaders of the Italian Communist Party over their "neutral" position, which verged on a positive attitude, towards the NATO at a time when there could be no mistaking the aggressive nature of US military policy.

Through his activities as an opinionist, as well as the initiatives of the group "Generals for Peace and Disarmament", not to mention the efforts of the Movement for Peace and Socialism, which he founded in 1985, Pasti devoted all his energies to a documented, professionally impeccable protest over the escalation towards rearmament and the preparations for war and military blackmail made by the West in its attempt to break the resistance of the socialist countries, even before unexpected allies had been found within these countries themselves.
